Headed back from the hike on the West Fork of Oak Creek.
Sunset is truly the magic hour in the Sonoran desert. It's a brief interlude when the blistering heat of the day begins to recede, the creatures of the day go off to their rest, and the denizens of darkness awaken and slowly emerge to conduct their nocturnal business. A tiny crescent sliver of moon is suspended in the arms of a giant sahuaro cactus, kept company by the evening star, Venus. Silence settles like a blanket over the landscape, and the wheel turns.
